Kaylee Fried, Age 7

Rare Birth Defect
Harriman, NY

Kaylee was born prematurely at 36 weeks weighing 5 pounds, 12 ounces. Soon after birth, she was diagnosed with a rare birth defect in which her stomach and esophagus were not connected. She was transferred from the local community hospital where she was born to Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, where she underwent the surgical repair she needed to survive and thrive. Today, Kaylee is a happy, healthy 7-year-old!

Tyrus Castrovinci, Age 6

Multiple Congenital Heart Defects
Bronx, NY

While still pregnant, Tyrus’s mother Dianna found out her baby boy was going to have multiple congenital heart defects, including a hole between the right and left ventricle and a narrowing of the pulmonary valve. A short three months after birth, Tyrus had an angiogram and at just six months of age, he had lifesaving open-heart surgery, both at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital. Today, Tyrus is a happy, healthy 6-year-old!

Zechia Mickler, Age 6

Diaphragmatic Hernia
Beacon, NY

When Zechia was 1 years old, she was diagnosed with a diaphragmatic hernia, an abnormal opening in the muscle between the chest and abdomen that aids in breathing. Physicians at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital worked to elevate her low oxygen levels, and later performed a minimally-invasive surgical repair that allowed Zechia to breathe properly. Today, Zechia is a happy, healthy 6-year-old!
